This week is Antiobiotic Awareness Week

Protecting the Future of Antibiotics

Antibiotic Awareness Week is a global initiative to highlight the importance of using antibiotics responsibly to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Together, we can ensure these life-saving medicines remain effective for generations to come.

Why Does It Matter?

Antibiotics are essential in treating bacterial infections, but their overuse and misuse are leading to the rise of drug-resistant bacteria. Without action, we risk losing the ability to treat infections that were once easily curable.

The UK Challenge

In the UK, antimicrobial resistance is a growing public health concern:

  • Over 70% of antibiotics are prescribed in primary care, mainly by GP surgeries.
  • Up to 20% of antibiotics prescribed in GP surgeries may be unnecessary, contributing to resistance.
  • Every year, 1 in 3 patients expects antibiotics for conditions like coughs, colds, or sore throats, even though these are often viral and don’t require antibiotics.
  • 5,000 deaths annually in England are linked to infections resistant to antibiotics.

What Can You Do?

  • Trust your GP’s advice when they say antibiotics aren’t needed.
  • Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed—never save leftovers or share them with others.
  • Help prevent infections by practicing good hygiene, like regular handwashing and staying up to date with vaccinations.

Key Messages:

  • Antibiotics aren’t always the answer. Many common illnesses like colds, flu, and most sore throats are caused by viruses, which antibiotics cannot treat.
  • Misusing antibiotics can harm you and others. Resistant bacteria can spread to your family and community.
  • We can all play a part. Patients, healthcare providers, and policymakers must work together to preserve antibiotics for the future.
